CVD diamonds are very different from other types of diamonds though they may not look like they are different. This style of diamond is often sought out by people who are environmentally friendly. This is so popular among these people because they are made by people instead of being taken from the earth. There are some things that make them stand out, which will be discussed below.
In truth, the answer is no. They are manmade within a lab by highly trained professionals. Yes, they look so much like the authentic diamonds that are mined out of the earth, but they are not truly real. They are completely synthetic. Now, there have been some diamond manufacturers that have had a different opinion, and in 2018, the FTC decided that they are the exact same as real diamonds.
A lot of people hear the word synthetic and instantly think the CVD diamond must be the same as a Cubic Zirconia, but this is not true. A Cubic Zirconia does not have any sparkle and shine to it that can be found in a real diamond. A CVD diamond has that shine and sparkle that makes people love them and instantly think they are completely real and the same as ones mined from the earth.
These diamonds are made through the chemical vapor deposition process, which is very unique from others. They are made out of a tiny diamond seed that is placed into a sealed chamber. They are then exposed to temperatures around 800 degrees celsius. Next, a mixture of carbon-rich gases is used on them. These gases break down, and the pure carbon attaches to the seeds. The carbon then builds up and grows the seed into a much larger diamond, similar to ones found in nature. It takes around 1 month to grow a 1ct diamond.
This is by no means the first-ever diamond to be lab-grown. The first-ever diamond was grown in a lab back in 1955 by General Electric. There are many different methods in which a diamond can be lab-grown, and each of them has their own methods. The CVD diamonds were reality by the 1980s.
While some of these diamonds come out looking a lot better then some natural diamonds come out, they are by no means perfect. Just like natural diamonds can have some defects in them from their growing process, these diamonds can as well. They are put through the same grading process as real diamonds, and they can have low grades just like real diamonds.
