Buying a new bed is no longer an experience that’s limited to choosing between a Queen or a King sized mattress anymore. There are traditional coil mattresses, memory foam mattresses, even beds-in-a-box, and of course, latex mattresses. So, what makes the latex mattress rise above the rest? Is there a reason to get one?

Here, we will explore the major advantages, and a few disadvantages, of buying a latex mattress:

First, if you’re asking what a latex mattress is, you’re not the only one! A latex mattress can be either synthetic or natural. Natural latex mattresses are made from the sap of the rubber tree and are more environmentally friendly. Synthetic latex is generally easier to get a hold of, though and as such, would be cheaper.

Think memory foam without the foam and that’s what latex mattresses are. They conform to the body the same as memory foam and are just as durable.

The biggest advantage to having a latex mattress is for those who live in hot climates and want to lay in a bed that won’t have them sweating five minutes later. Latex beds are naturally cool, so people looking for something to sleep on during those hot summer nights can breathe a sigh of relief.

The biggest disadvantage to the latex mattress is that they are among the more expensive mattresses to buy out there. They can be as low as under a thousand dollars, however, so only people buying the best king size mattress will find themselves spending thousands of dollars.

Another pro to the latex mattress is that most people find them to be just as good at supporting a body but also quite comfortable at the same time. The material also tends to bounce back faster after a person has slept on it compared to memory foam mattresses.

They are also said to be great for people who tend to have allergies, although there is about five percent of the population who might be allergic to the latex, itself. For those who aren’t though, they can look forward to latex mattresses being resistant to dust mites, mildew, and mould. Latex mattresses are also known for their durability and distributes motion evenly, allowing for people to have a sleep undisturbed by the movements of their partner.

The major drawback of a latex mattress is much the same as the foam ones and that’s weight. They are heavy, making them difficult to move. Sun exposure is also an issue for this type of mattress as the UV light can cause the latex to harden. Latex can also be affected by heat and melt under certain circumstances.

The best way to solve these issues is to get a strong arm to move the mattress in, make sure the bed is protected from sunlight exposure and to limit the use of any electric blankets of pads around the bed.

Besides that, the pros do appear to outweigh the cons, making a latex mattress a good buy for those who want a comfortable night’s sleep and especially for those with allergens.
